What is the best home care advice after microneedling? Our Toronto-based team is often asked this question by patients who are having our minimally invasive procedure for skin rejuvenation. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, or skin needling, is a treatment that’s designed to promote collagen production. Microneedles create tiny punctures in the skin to promote the production of collagen and elastin for youthful-looking skin. This treatment improves conditions such as fine lines, crow’s feet, enlarged pores, uneven texture, dullness, scars, and stretch marks by stimulating the body’s natural healing properties. Some minor side effects can occur after you have microneedling, such as redness for about a day and some bruising that may last for a few days. Here are some home care tips to help with a speedy recovery.
- Keep Your Skin Hydrated
Your skin may feel warm and tight for 12-24 hours after microneedling. You may apply cool compresses. Keep your skin well-hydrated with a hyaluronic acid serum and a mild moisturizer. Keep your body hydrated as well by drinking plenty of water which also helps support cell regeneration.
- Use A Gentle Cleanser
Use a gentle cleanser morning and evening and don’t scrub.
- Protect Your Skin from The Sun
Start applying sunscreen the day after your treatment. It’s best to apply a mineral based broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of thirty or higher everyday. You may apply make-up. Wear protective clothing to help shield your skin as well.
- Avoid Infections
Avoid touching your face needlessly and don’t pick any dry skin. If you are taking antiviral medication for cold sores, continue for a total of 5 days.
- When Should You Resume Your Usual Routine?
On the 3rd day, you should resume using your routine products. Your skin will feel rough for about one week and you may experience a mild exfoliation. In 1-2 weeks, your skin will start to appear smoother.
